As wildfires tore through northern Arizona last week, consuming over 40,000 acres of forestland and forcing thousands to evacuate, one story has risen above the smoke — not just for its drama, but for the deep humanity it revealed.
On Thursday afternoon, as flames engulfed a remote stretch of woodland near Flagstaff, emergency radio traffic crackled with panic. A 7-year-old girl, separated from her family during the chaotic evacuation, was reported missing. For hours, firefighters and volunteers scoured the burning terrain, hindered by low visibility, shifting winds, and collapsing trees. Hopes began to fade.
Then, at dusk, from the thick curtain of smoke, a shape emerged.

Unbeknownst to his team, Ace had picked up the girl’s scent and tracked her deep into the burning forest. How he found her, and how he carried her out while injured himself, remains something of a mystery.
“Dogs aren’t trained to carry children on their backs,” said Officer Hill, who reunited with Ace shortly after the rescue. “But he’s always had this protective instinct. He must’ve known she couldn’t walk.”
The girl, identified only as Emily for privacy reasons, had sustained minor burns and was suffering from smoke inhalation and dehydration — but doctors say she will make a full recovery.
Ace wasn’t as lucky. He suffered second-degree burns on his paws and back, and is currently recovering at a veterinary burn unit in Phoenix. The team reports he is stable, eating well, and expected to recover.
