As floodwaters surged through parts of Central Texas over the weekend, a dramatic and unplanned act of bravery stunned an entire rescue team — and saved a young girl’s life.
Emergency responders were working in flooded rural areas near Travis County when they received a report of a missing child believed to have been swept away. After hours of searching, they located a 7-year-old girl trapped beneath a fallen tree along the edge of a submerged road. She was clinging to the tree trunk, barely above the rushing water, visibly shaken and physically pinned.

As the team was assessing how to safely reach her, a K9 search-and-rescue dog named “Jax,” part of the local sheriff’s department, broke from his handler without warning.
“He didn’t wait for a command,” said Sgt. Lauren Mitchell. “He saw her. He just went.”
Jax plunged into the cold, debris-filled water and swam straight toward the girl. The current was swift, and visibility was low, but the dog didn’t hesitate. Within moments, he reached her and gently latched onto her sleeve with his mouth, helping to keep her head above water and nudging her into a safer position.

That action gave the rescue crew the precious seconds they needed to move in. With ropes and flotation gear, the team was able to reach both the girl and the dog, pulling them to safety. The girl was treated on-site and later transported to a nearby hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery.
Jax, soaked and shivering, remained alert beside her the entire time.
“This dog didn’t just follow orders — he made a decision,” said Chief Rescue Officer Ben Alvarez. “And that decision likely saved her life.”
The sheriff’s office confirmed that Jax will be formally recognized for his actions. For the girl’s family, no recognition could match the moment they saw their daughter alive — and the four-legged hero who brought her back.
