A massive wildfire swept through parts of Coconino County over the weekend, destroying dozens of homes and prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents. Amid the chaos and smoke, a heroic police K9 named Rex has emerged as a symbol of bravery after rescuing an elderly man with memory loss from the heart of the blaze.
According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the fire began early Saturday morning near the edge of the Coconino National Forest and was quickly intensified by dry weather and strong winds. By Sunday afternoon, over 15,000 acres had been scorched, and more than 300 firefighters were on the scene battling the flames.
As first responders rushed door-to-door to evacuate residents in the high-risk area of Forest Hills, one household presented a critical challenge. Neighbors reported that 82-year-old Harold Thompson, who suffers from advanced memory loss and limited mobility, had not been seen leaving his home.

Deputy Lisa Martinez and her K9 partner, Rex, arrived at the scene just as flames engulfed nearby trees. Without hesitation, Rex darted into the smoke-filled home through a partially open door. “I could barely see through the smoke,” said Martinez. “I called out for Mr. Thompson, but there was no response. Rex went in ahead of me, and within minutes, I heard a soft bark from the back of the house.”
Rex located Thompson disoriented in his bedroom, unable to find his way out. The German Shepherd stayed by his side and barked persistently until Deputy Martinez was able to reach them and guide both to safety. Moments later, the house’s roof collapsed from the fire.
Emergency services treated Mr. Thompson for smoke inhalation, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Coconino County Sheriff Jim Randall praised Rex’s actions in a press conference Monday morning: “Rex’s courage and instincts undoubtedly saved a life. He acted not just as a service animal, but as a true hero.”
The wildfire, now being referred to as the Forest Hills Fire, is estimated to be 45% contained as of Tuesday morning. Several communities remain under evacuation orders, and investigators are still determining the fire’s cause.
As for Rex, the K9 is recovering well and was given a special steak dinner at the station Monday night, along with a custom medal of honor. He will resume duty after a brief period of rest.
“He’s more than a dog,” said Deputy Martinez. “He’s my partner—and now, a community hero.”
