Authorities say the girl, identified only as Sophie, 6, had been trapped for nearly 18 hours inside what remained of her family’s home. Heavy rains and surging waters had swept away the lower floor, leaving her stranded under debris.
It was Max, the K9 search-and-rescue dog, who first caught her scent. According to team leader Jack Morgan — the man in the now-iconic photo — Max stopped in the middle of a flooded street, ears pricked, and began pulling toward a partially collapsed structure.
“Without him, we wouldn’t have found her in time,” Morgan said. “She was cold, frightened, but alive — and that’s all that mattered.”

By the time rescuers reached Sophie, the water had risen dangerously close to her shelter space. She was shivering, barely able to speak. Morgan wrapped her in the thermal blanket before wading through waist-deep water to safety, Max following close behind.
Paramedics confirmed Sophie is in stable condition and has since been reunited with her parents, who had been rescued hours earlier from a nearby evacuation shelter.
