An 11-year-old Texas boy has died after being shot in the back while allegedly taking part in a door-knocking prank in southeast Houston, police said.

The incident unfolded around 10:55 p.m. on Saturday. According to authorities, the boy had been ringing doorbells in the neighborhood and running away when tragedy struck. Witnesses reported that as he fled from one home, a man stepped outside with a handgun and fired multiple shots in the direction of the children.

The boy, who lived just a block away, managed to run about one street before collapsing. He was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on Sunday. His name is being withheld pending an autopsy.

Houston Police confirmed that one individual was detained for questioning shortly after the shooting. Initially released, the man was taken back into custody after the boy’s death was confirmed. Investigators executed a search warrant at the house connected to the shooting and discovered a large cache of weapons inside. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the man detained was the homeowner.

“The possible suspect has been interviewed but not formally charged,” Sgt. Michael Cass of the Houston Police Department stated at a press conference.

Police noted that the boy was not alone at the time; at least two friends were with him when the gunfire erupted. The incident highlights growing concern about so-called “door-knocking” or “ding dong ditch” pranks—an activity where kids knock, bang, or kick on doors before fleeing, often filming the act for social media.

Law enforcement agencies across the U.S. have warned parents about the dangers of this trend, which is sometimes referred to as the “Door Kicking Challenge.” Officials caution that such pranks can easily be mistaken for attempted break-ins and provoke violent reactions from homeowners.

Similar incidents have already occurred this year. In July, a Frisco, Texas, man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after allegedly firing multiple rounds at a vehicle leaving his home following a door-banging prank. In Arizona, police released surveillance footage of juveniles committing the prank 18 times at the same residence, eventually forcing the homeowner to move.

Police departments have urged families to educate children about the risks.

“These ‘pranks’ can have serious consequences,” Chandler, Arizona, police said in a statement. “What may seem like harmless fun can result in danger, injuries, or even death.”

The Houston case is now being investigated as a homicide.
