A K9 dog named Max, trained in search and rescue, made the ultimate act of devotion by plunging into violent floodwaters to save his owner — a heroic moment witnessed by several rescue workers and neighbors, many of whom were moved to tears.

It happened on Sunday morning in the small town of Riverdale, where torrential rain had turned the normally calm Westbrook Creek into a deadly current. Jason Hartley, a 34-year-old volunteer firefighter, was trying to evacuate residents when he lost his footing and was swept away. Standing on the edge of the water was Max, his loyal German Shepherd partner of five years.
