Danielle Louise Spencer, best known as “Dee” from What’s Happening!!, has passed away on August 11, 2025, at the age of 60 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

A Life Beyond the Laughter
Born on June 24, 1965, in Trenton, New Jersey, Spencer rose to fame as Dee Thomas—the smart-aleck younger sister—on the beloved ABC sitcom What’s Happening!! (1976–1979) and its sequel What’s Happening Now!! (1985–1988).
Her career and personal life were marked by resilience. At age 12, she survived a devastating car accident in 1977 that tragically took her stepfather’s life and left her in a coma for three weeks, resulting in lasting spinal and neurological damage.

Despite these challenges, Spencer went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in 1993. She practiced as a veterinarian, hosted pet-care segments on television, and even appeared in films like As Good as It Gets (1997) and a short Peter Rabbit and the Crucifix (2001).
A Warrior Until the End
Spencer faced further health battles, including:
-
A breast cancer diagnosis in 2014, followed by a double mastectomy,
-
Emergency brain surgery in 2018 for bleeding related to her earlier accident, and
-
Chronic spinal issues that led to partial paralysis and numerous surgeries.
Nonetheless, she remained committed to her work as a healer—helping animals and inspiring others with her grace and determination.
Haywood Nelson’s Tribute: A Touching Farewell
News of her passing was announced by her former What’s Happening!! co-star Haywood Nelson, who portrayed “Dwayne.” In a heartfelt Instagram post, Nelson called Spencer a “brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior”, writing:
“Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior… has finally found her release from the clutches of this world and a body.”
“We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, What’s Happening cast member, veterinarian, animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine. Our Shero… Danielle is loved. She will be missed in this form and forever embraced.”
Others—including Ernest Lee Thomas (Raj from the show), her brother Jeremy Pelt, and actress Holly Robinson Peete—shared moving recollections of Spencer’s kindness, humor, and resilience.
Legacy of a True Shero
Danielle Spencer’s legacy transcends her early stardom. She embodied strength, compassion, and perseverance—first through laughter, then through service as a veterinarian and advocate. She was later honored as the only former child actor in the permanent exhibits of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture
