A fiery clash erupted on MSNBC Friday night when Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) unleashed a blistering attack on former President Donald Trump, accusing him of acting like nothing more than a “Kremlin kiss-up” during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.
Swalwell did not hold back, declaring on The Weeknight:
“If you’re a Republican in Congress, you just watched a Kremlin kiss-up in the President of the United States. Someone who wasted an opportunity to confront a ruthless dictator who kidnaps and kills innocent children every single day.”
The California Democrat went further, saying Trump’s behavior was “even more shameful than Helsinki,” referencing the 2018 summit where Trump was widely criticized for siding with Putin over U.S. intelligence agencies.
“Honestly, he acted like Putin was receiving a lifetime achievement award,” Swalwell continued. “It was a nothing-burger, a total waste of time, and an embarrassment to every American who expects their commander-in-chief to stand up to tyranny.”
Swalwell suggested the summit accomplished little beyond serving as a political distraction:
“I don’t know what this meeting achieved other than taking Epstein’s files and inflation out of the headlines. But you don’t set up these kinds of meetings just to pat each other on the back. It was shameful to watch.”
The explosive remarks immediately lit up social media, with critics of Trump seizing on Swalwell’s description of the former president as a “Russian asset.” Supporters of Trump, meanwhile, dismissed the comments as partisan theatrics, insisting the former president was pursuing diplomacy.
Still, the controversy highlights a growing unease among Democrats — and even some Republicans — that Trump, should he return to power, may once again take a softer stance on Moscow, even as Putin’s regime faces accusations of war crimes and international isolation.
For Swalwell, the bottom line was simple:
“It should alarm every single American, especially those serving in our military, that a commander-in-chief would be so deferential — so flattering — to a ruthless dictator like Vladimir Putin.”
As the 2024 election heats up, the clash between Trump’s defenders and his fiercest critics shows no sign of cooling. And after Swalwell’s explosive outburst, one thing is certain: the political firestorm has only just begun.
