They Were the Most Unlikely Crime-Fighting Duo in America — But After 16 Years Together, When the Beloved Sheriff Took His Final Breath After a Long Battle With C@ncer, the World’s Smallest Police Dog, Midge, Laid Down at Home and Quietly P@ssed Aw@y Just Hours Later — And What Her Family Believes Happened in Those Final Moments Will Break Your Heart_cheese

In a world of massive K9 units and intimidating German Shepherds, there was one little dog who defied every expectation, proving that courage doesn’t come in size. Her name was Midge — a tiny rat terrier-Chihuahua mix who captured national headlines not for her bark, but for her unshakable bond with the man beside her: Sheriff Dan McClelland.

Together, they were a familiar sight in Geauga County. She trotted by his side in parades, rode shotgun in his patrol car, and sat proudly during press conferences. While some chuckled at first at the sight of such a small dog wearing a badge, it didn’t take long for the community — and eventually the country — to fall in love with her.

Midge wasn’t just a mascot. She was a certified narcotics detection dog, trained to sniff out illegal substances. Her small frame allowed her to search cars more easily than her larger counterparts, especially in tight spaces. But more than her skills, it was her personality — spunky, loyal, and full of life — that made her unforgettable.

Her handler, Sheriff Dan McClelland, was no less remarkable. A 44-year veteran of law enforcement, he was known for his calm demeanor, deep sense of justice, and unwavering love for his community — and for Midge. The pair worked together for over a decade, building not just a partnership, but a storybook friendship that melted even the toughest hearts.

But every great story has an ending.

💔 “She Stayed With Him Until the Very End…”

On April 14th, 2021, Dan McClelland passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones, at peace after a life of service.

Back home, Midge seemed restless that day. According to family members, she paced the house, whined softly, and repeatedly looked toward the door — as if waiting for him to return.

“She just… knew,” said his widow. “There was something in her eyes that morning. Like she could feel he was gone.”

Just a few hours after Dan took his final breath… so did Midge.

She didn’t make a sound. She didn’t struggle. She simply lay down in her favorite spot — Dan’s recliner — and drifted off.

🌈 A Love So Pure It Crossed the Veil

Veterinarians confirmed there was no acute medical cause for Midge’s passing. No signs of trauma, illness, or distress. To many who knew her, the cause was clear: she died of heartbreak.

“It happens more often than people realize,” said Dr. Anya Brooks, an animal behaviorist. “When a dog’s bond with their human is that deep, their entire sense of purpose can collapse after that person is gone. They grieve just like we do — sometimes more.”

And for Midge, Dan wasn’t just her handler. He was her world.

🕊 A Town in Mourning, a Legacy That Lives On

The people of Geauga County were devastated by the double loss. Hundreds gathered at the courthouse square to leave flowers, cards, and photos. Someone even left a tiny dog vest with the note: “Thank you, Deputy Midge. You did your job well.”

News outlets across the country picked up the story. CNN. CBS. Local affiliates. And soon, thousands of people who had never set foot in Ohio were crying over a dog they never met.

President Biden even sent a note of recognition, honoring Sheriff McClelland for his “lifelong dedication to public safety” and acknowledging Midge as “a symbol of loyalty and service that inspired millions.”

🐾 One Final Ride

Midge was laid to rest next to Dan — just as they’d spent most of their days: side by side. Their joint funeral was simple, heartfelt, and attended by officers from across the state. Bagpipes played “Amazing Grace.” A canine honor guard stood watch. And when the final salute was given, not a single dry eye remained.

In the end, Midge reminded us that heroism isn’t measured in size or breed or bark. It’s measured in love, loyalty, and how far you’re willing to go for someone who gave you their heart.

And sometimes… that means leaving this world just moments after they do.
